Bocas Biodiversity: Birding & Wildlife Eco tours by @stacebird

Green Acres Mainland Wildlife & Birding Tour

A trip to the Green Acres is a fantastic mainland wildlife and birding destination (for a greater diversity of species on the mainland than our islands here in the archipelago), replete with a wide array of tropical wildlife with the chance to possibly encounter sloths and monkeys, fascinating reptiles and colorful amphibians, toucans, butterflies and much more.

Green Acres is set in a remote corner of the Bocas del Toro archipelago’s mainland overlooking Dolphin Bay where we may see Atlantic bottlenose dolphins on the peaceful ride in. We will arrive by boat to this lush hillside rainforest and botanical wonderland, both of which make a perfect refuge for the birds and wildlife we will discover on a hike through this cacao farm shaded by a biodiverse rainforest.

With howler monkeys bellowing from the distant treetops, sloths hanging from the mangroves and toucans, fruit crows and black-chested jays flying between the mature fruiting trees of this protected forest you’ll learn about the flora and fauna and our important connections to all this abundant life that grows around us.

Birding on this mainland forest refuge is not to be beat as we are going to experience a greater biodiversity of birds and wildlife than what occur on the archipelago. So we will see species that you will not find on the islands of Bocas del Toro. The mainland experience can’t be missed if you are a birding enthusiast and we will have changes to see Purple-throated Fruit-Crow, Black-capped Pygmy Tyrant, Brown-capped Tyrranulet, Black-chested Jays, Cocoa Woodcreeper, Pale-billed Woodpecker, Gartered and Slaty-tailed trogons, Long-billed Hermit and more!

This is a wildlife and birds focused ecotour. For a an indepth tour on the process of making chocolate, this tour can be taken independently of Bocas Biodiversity, with the farm’s owner Gary as your guide for an educational jaunt through the forest and in-depth experience on how the process of chocolate making is carried out. To learn more, visit Gary’s website for a fantastic rainforest chocolate tour!

The farm is owned and run by the charismatic and passion-driven Gary Mitchell who bought the property in 2019 and has implemented his own wildlife conservation initiatives, unique botanical style and a delightful character that can’t help but make everyone quickly at ease and soon laughing and joking together like old friends while sharing a love for chocolate (delicious samples at the end of the tour!) tropical nature and all of its inhabitants.
